How Did Golf get Started?

How did golf get started? Who started it? When did it become a sport?
Well I think we have to thanks the Scots for making the sport, but in 1457 King James II of Scotland banned the stick and ball game as it was keeping his archers from their work. But was is really the Scottish who invented the sport?

The USGA Museum has something to say about it:
"While many Scots firmly maintain that golf evolved from a family of stick-and-ball games widely practiced throughout the British Isles during the Middle Ages, considerable evidence suggests that the game derived from stick-and-ball games that were played in France, Germany and the Low Countries."
As there are many countries with evidence that traces back to the orgin of golf, no one will really ever know who invented the game and Golf grew out of games that were played in many different parts of Europe. One significance about the Scots is, is that they made the ball going into the hole the object of the game.  When Golf was getting started, they only had 5 - 7 holes. Today we have the standard 18 holes, which used to vary from 22 holes to ten or more holes. But in 1858 golf was set to 18 holes. Stroke play was introduced to the golf in 1759.  What were the clubs like?  The club heads were made from wood and the balls were made with feathers hand sewn with leather. Irons were then introduced with hand - forged iron.

What is Golf?

Golf is a ball and club sport which when playing, requires a series of different clubs to get the ball a certain distance. For one round of golf, there are eighteen holes to play. Each hole has a certain par. Par is the pre - determined number of strokes in which a zero handicap golfer should complete on a hole and the final score of the round. It is the key component of the play. The handicap of a golfer is the average amount of strokes they shoot over par for each round. Golf is one of the few sports in which it does not require a standardized playing area such as a sport like basketball. Golf is played on a course with different hazards around the greens and fairways. Each hole must consist of a tee box (Where you hit your first shot on the hole) and a green. (A green is where the hole is)
When playing in a golf tournament, the objective of the game is to shoot par. But what you really want is to shoot the lowest number of strokes.

Here are some interesting Facts about Golf:

-       Golf originated in the 15th century in Scotland.
-       Play the ball as it lies, play the course as you find it, and if you cannot do either, do what is fair.
-       Only 14 clubs allowed in a bag.
-       Only 4 Albatrosses have ever been recorded. (4 under par on one hole)
-       The longest putt ever was as long as 114 meters.
-       The chances of making two holes-in-one in a round of golf are one in 67 million.
